Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi spare key replacement, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
