World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, dependent on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It is also used as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). The average level of the item can be found in the character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell equipment, players can compare the item level. It's a sign of the item's condition and its quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done using the item level.

On PC, you can check the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its level. It can also be located by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory suggests that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine the worth of an item's stats really are. It considers the fact that different perks have different values and that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.

It's not the only factor that affects the ilvl of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped can alter its stats. For instance, it could add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can make or break an item for players. The game makes use of them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon, and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The stat modifications of an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item level upgrade. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. An item that is white or grey for instance, can only be upgraded one time and items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Another way to change the stats on an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes could be used to give the item additional damage, or add a unique capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or reducing cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item.

Presently, all affixes are able to be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items, which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same way as other rerolling options.

Players can upgrade an item to specific stats or reroll attaches. The stat ranges are determined by the item upgrader kit's level. However, all items will include at least one stat in that range unless they are a unique item or a God Roll from a raid boss.

This is another aspect that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would have to be carried out on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties created by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, upgrade items however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade gear earlier in the game. This is more beneficial for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increases with each item level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn using the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that deals damage by 5%. These items are available in the shops or made with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it does not work.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limitations on how much success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an item upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. All items have a success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
